City of Toronto to conduct traditional and prescribed burns (Biinaakzigewok Anishnaabeg) on Thursday
The City of Toronto will be conducting the annual traditional and prescribed burns (Biinaakzigewok Anishnaabeg) in High Park and South Humber Park on Thursday, April 17, to help protect rare black oak savannah and woodland habitats.
The High Park burn will begin in the late morning, followed by South Humber Park in the afternoon.
A technical and safety briefing will take place at 10 a.m. in High Park, followed by a media availability with the City’s Urban Forestry experts and a representative from the Indigenous Land Stewardship Circle prior to the start of the burn.
Media are required to attend the briefing to remain onsite during the burn.
Date: Thursday, April 17
Time: 10 a.m.
Location: Grenadier Café parking lot, 200 Parkside Dr., inside High Park
RSVP: Media are asked to RSVP by 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16 to media@toronto.ca
Access notes:
• Media vehicles may enter and exit the park between 9:15 and 11:45 a.m. using the Parkside Drive and High Park Boulevard entrance.
• Members of the media must show their credentials for entry, have hazard lights flashing while driving through the park and not exceed a speed of 10 km/h.
• Media vehicles must remain parked at the Grenadier Café during ignition of the burn.
• Drones are not permitted over the burn sites.
A ceremony and smudge led by Indigenous Elder Vivian Recollet will take place before the briefing. No photographs or filming will be permitted during this time to respect the sacredness of the opening ceremony and smudge.
