City of Toronto opens energy and water reporting link for Toronto's largest buildings

The City of Toronto has opened its reporting link to allow owners of Toronto’s largest buildings to report their 2024 energy and water use to the City. Reporting supports building owners in their efforts to improve environmental performance, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and lower operating costs.

Owners of buildings 4,645 square meters (50,000 square feet) and larger are already required to report their energy and water use to the Province of Ontario. Building owners can report to both the City and the Province using the same free online tool, Energy Star Portfolio Manager: https://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/pm/login.

The deadline for reporting 2024 building energy and water use to the City is Wednesday, July 2, while the deadline to report to the Province is Tuesday, July 1.

Starting in 2026, buildings 929 square metres (10,000 square feet) or larger will also be required to report energy and water data to the City.

Buildings represent more than half of the GHG emissions in Toronto, mostly due to energy and water use, which can also represent some of the largest operating costs for building owners. By reporting energy and water use, building owners can track their buildings’ performance over time, compare it with the performance of similar buildings, and identify opportunities to improve energy and water efficiency.

Informational webinars

The City is hosting two informational webinars to help building owners understand the City’s Energy and Water Reporting Bylaw and how to report their data.

More information about the reporting requirements, how to report and to register for the webinars is available on the City’s Energy and Water Reporting webpage: www.toronto.ca/EWRB.

Support for building owners to improve their buildings’ energy efficiency

The City has programs to support building owners as they improve their buildings’ energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions including:
- Better Buildings Navigation & Support Services: Provides building owners, operators and property managers with support to identify and navigate available programs, incentives and resources that improve their buildings’ energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions.
- Green Will Initiative: This initiative provides support to the owners of Toronto’s major institutional and commercial building portfolios in reducing GHG emissions to net zero.
- Home Energy Loan Program: Toronto homeowners can get a low-interest loan of up to $125,000 to cover the cost of a broad range of home energy improvements.

More information about support for building owners is available online at the City’s website: https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/net-zero-homes-buildings/better-buildings-partnership/.
