City of Toronto pays tribute to former Mayor of York, Gayle Christie

On behalf of the City of Toronto and Toronto City Council, Mayor Olivia Chow offers her condolences on the passing of Gayle Christie, former Mayor of the Borough of York, who passed away on Wednesday, August 14.

Christie was born in Toronto and attended school at Runnymede Collegiate Institute. She was first elected as a Trustee on the Board of Education, on which she served from 1972 to 1976.

Christie was elected as Alderman for the Borough of York from 1976 to 1978. She was elected Mayor of York and served in this capacity from 1978 to 1982. She also served on Metro Toronto Council during this time.

Following her political career, Christie was a member of the Board of Directors for Air Canada, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), Humber Hospital and Yorktown Community Services.

In Christie’s honour, flags at Toronto City Hall and all civic centres will be lowered to half-mast from today. The City will advise when the half-mast period will end.
